So, It was a casual Saturday when I logged onto Facebook, in my messages my cousin Kevin had dropped a bomb in the family group chat...Okay, not a real bomb. Just really great news.
He posted a beautifully blinding-diamond ring that he was going to use to propose to his girlfriend of four years, Kanisha.
"What do y'all think? You're the first to see it", He wrote. We were star struck through the computer screen. WAS THIS REALLY HAPPENING?!
This moment was a long time coming and one that made our family very impatient. At family barbecues, Kevin would receive the occasional passive-aggressive questions and comments alike, "Kev, what are you waiting for? You want to marry her don't you?" or the famous, "Hello?? When is the wedding? We all know you're next in line.. Whats taking so long?" comments.
So, as you can imagine, I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the ring in our group chat.
There was no debate that I would be there for my cousin to photograph his surprise engagement. We orchestrated the entire scene within a few hours. To get the ball rolling, we would use the excuse of bringing along a vlog camera to document the day with the fact that both Kevin and Kanisha are Youtuber's and it consequently being the first day of the year, a fun relaxed couples photoshoot would make for a great addition to their channel.
Next step, location.
Choosing High Park's wide, calm and very frozen-over Grenadier Pond as the outdoor scenery seemed perfect and organic.
Lastly, Kevin determined the date and set the plan in action for the morning of January 1st, 2018.
The moment Kanisha turned around away from the vlog camera, Kevin was down on one knee. Her response was overcome by emotion and a sudden wave of tears streaming down her face. Kevin spoke of the future he hoped for the two of them and his testimony of faith and love he had in their relationship and for her, the woman of his dreams.
This day would symbolize for most, new beginnings, resolutions, a year to set goals and accomplish many if not all. For Kevin and Kanisha, proposing on the 1st would mean wiping the slate clean, being able to begin, resolve, goal set, accomplish, plan, strive, travel, love, explore and create together. This day was about not only individual beginnings but for the first time in their lives, they would be stepping into life as one. For the first time, they would be a unit describing their love as humble yet fierce and one of a kind.
This day marks the beginning of the rest of their years.
This day claims success, happiness and triumph.
This day celebrates the journey ahead.
This day is theirs, together.
I am undoubtedly excited for the both of you in taking this next step. You've always been apart of the family, Kanisha, but now its OFFICIAL! #RobinsonFamilyWedding #LETSGO !
